I am a historian and researcher with a focus on garden studies and Russian history, particularly during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. My work centres on how material culture and visual representation intersect with social and political history. My first book explored the role of gardens as spaces where women in Imperial Russia could subtly shape political discourse and articulate their own ideas within a largely patriarchal society. This research highlighted how gardens served as symbolic grounds for women’s agency.
My current project investigates representations of race in Russian art from the eighteenth century, analysing how visual culture both reflected and influenced contemporary attitudes toward identity, ethnicity, and social hierarchy. Through these studies, I aim to bring greater awareness to underexplored perspectives within Russian history and contribute to a more nuanced understanding of how cultural spaces and visual media interact with social and political forces.
